For those Edinburgh eaters and Tweeters who have been on the radar of late, it’s probable you’ll have heard of The Edinburgh Cake Ladies by now. Like a good Victoria sponge, it’s a simple but successful concept. Attendees bake a cake, these friendly types arrange to meet up at a certain time and place, and a whole bunch of cake-related fun subsequently ensues.
Due to schedule, work and all the rest, I had presumed that I wouldn’t be heading along to the event which took place at Loudon’s Coffee House last Thursday night. However, thanks to extremely encouraging words from some of the cake ladies (thanks Hilary and Alison!) I made a last minute decision to head along.
The theme was ‘Feel the fear and bake it anyway’, which was a challenge to all of the bakers to go for it! For the majority, this meant some serious planning, testing, perfecting and tasting. And the resulting cakes were stunning. For me, the fear was due to my starting planning my cake at 6:15pm for an event that started at 7pm across the town!
A very hastily baked, cooled, badly decorated cake arrived at 7:54pm, thanks to my trusty steed, Vincenzo the Vespa. As this was my first event, I hadn’t been prepared for the truly awesome array of cakes which had been brought along. The buzz in the room was fantastic (let me hear you say Sugar High!) , there were a few familiar faces, and it was great to meet a few people that so far I’d only known electronically via twitter and the like.
The icing on the cake (pah, lazy writing!) was that the whole thing was being recorded for prosperity by Peter Ross from Scotland on Sunday, and a photographer was in tow to make sure that the gorgeousness of both the ladies -plus token fella- and the cakes was recorded. The full article (including my naughty food porn quote!) can be found online here .

Am hoping to make it along to one of the next meets! Just found the Edinburgh Cake Ladies just before last week’s event. Enjoyed the write-up in the Scotland On Sunday. xx
