So, here we foodies find ourselves in January, and if ever there’s a month one’s indulgence should be reigned in and a little more focus given to healthy eating, this is it. Like many people out there, my December will have flown by in a flurry of vino, mince pies and probably my equivalent body weight in honey-mustard chipolatas.
So, how best to clear out the cobwebs and give your body a well deserved break? Tattie Shaws could be your one stop shop for some detox-worthy fodder. This is the perfect example of an independent greengrocer. They focus on locally-sourced fruit and veggies, but also have amazing variety from the world’s harvests, along with gourmet breads, pulses, spices, nuts and dried fruit. Their window display always looks enticing; in Autumn it’ll be vibrant with colour from the giant pumpkins, gourds and squashes, and in the summer a mix of greens and red berries.
Going-meat free can be a good way to allow your gut to have a bit of a rest, and a dish like vegetable stir-fry is always a tasty, quick dinner, and this shop has an ever-replenished roster of five-a-days to choose from. Chop up broccoli, carrots, peppers, bok choi, shiitake mushrooms, snow peas, a heap of fresh ginger, garlic, soy and toasted cashew nuts and serve with brown rice. Same goes for a chunky vegetable curry. It might take a bit more thought than ordering from the local take-away, but freshness will be your reward!
Do make sure you get those vitamins in to your body, and so why not haul that juice-extractor out from the cupboard and get juicing? A classic combination is made with apples, carrots, ginger and celery. Tattie Shaws always have a good choice of apples, including my all-time fave Cox’s Orange Pippins. Nothing beats a fruit salad to perk up the tastebuds midwinter, and zingy fruit like pineapple, pomegranate, orange segments and blueberries with a dash of heather honey are wonderful, and keeps well in the fridge.
And lastly, if it’s getting towards the end of January and you’re starting to get that ‘thirst’ back, these guys also sell really fresh herbs, so celebrate the end of the month with a mint and lime juice-packed mojito!
